Within Boris FX's Workplace: Video Editing Guru, Nick Harauz's Presence

Nick Harauz, a native of Toronto, Canada, has made a name for himself in the post-production industry. With a background in film studies and sociology, Harauz started his career after winning a one-year stipend with the Canadian Film and Television Production Association (CFTPA) to work with Clearwater Films in Vancouver.

Today, Harauz is an experienced professional, an instructor, and a certified Adobe, Apple, and Avid user. He specializes in video editing and production technologies, teaching practical courses focused on efficient review and collaboration in post-production, as well as cutting-edge applications of generative AI and prompt engineering for media workflows.

One of Harauz's current projects that he is most proud of is his book and LinkedIn course called "Finding Creativity in Uncertain Times." He also has a forthcoming book to his name. Additionally, Harauz is working on expanding the message and reach of Continuum, a product he currently directs at Boris FX.

Harauz finds great artistic inspiration from various sources. He enjoys watching films and TV shows, with "Dune" and "The Queen's Gambit" being his favourites this year. He also finds inspiration in reading books like "Let the Elephants Run" by David Usher and "The War of Art" by Steven Pressfield.

When it comes to snacks, Dill pickle chips take the top spot on Harauz's list. For a morning pick-me-up, he prefers coffee. And when working on epic sessions, coffee remains his go-to snack.

In terms of collaboration, Harauz advises breaking projects up into executable chunks, accounting for regular distractions, and allowing ideas to breathe and projects to have a stronger evolution. If he could collaborate with any artist (living or dead), he would choose Dennis Villeneuve.

Harauz also finds inspiration from stepping away from the computer and experiencing new things. Whether it's taking a walk or going on a trip, these experiences help fuel his creativity.

In dealing with creative burnout, Harauz suggests taking breaks and focusing on lifestyle factors like health, sleep, and diet. He is excited about the smaller size of Boris FX, as it allows for more freedom to run with projects and make them his own.

Lastly, Harauz offers career advice to his younger self. He advises remembering that he is not his client's feedback and applying the 10 min rule on days where he struggles to start work or is stuck procrastinating. Furthermore, he advises taking a one-year trip to New Zealand in January 2020, a piece of advice he wishes he had taken himself.

Nick Harauz, who has a keen interest in technology, incorporates generative AI and prompt engineering into his practical post-production courses. During his leisure time, he enjoys following sports, such as taking a break from his work to watch "Dune" or "The Queen's Gambit", which he considers this year's highlights in the field of entertainment.
