Ready to Record Anywhere? Introducing Fender Studio, a beginner-friendly recording app
Ever wanted to record your musical ideas but found the process too complex? Enter Fender Studio, a new app that's here to simplify recording. Compatible with macOS, Windows, Linux, iOS, and Android, it boasts easy-to-use features like one-tap recording, Fender amp models, and effects. And the best part? It's free!
Fender Studio has long been in the works. In 2021, the company acquired Presonus, developer of the Studio One DAW, but it was only in 2022 that Fender CEO Andy Mooney voiced his frustration with the excessive complexity in music software.
"Truth be told, I've never found a DAW I didn't need a degree in MIT to figure out," Mooney told MusicRadar. "Creating music shouldn't require more time deciphering software than the actual creation process. That's the idea behind Fender Studio - a user-friendly, accessible recording app."
Open Fender Studio, and you'll find a big, red record button right at the start. Click (or tap) it, and - provided your device's mic is active or your guitar is hooked up to a compatible audio interface - your performance is ready to go.
Mooney's vision for a single-click recording app has come true. "For years, I've been saying you should be able to hit a record button on your phone and start recording," he says. "We've done exactly that. We believe Fender Studio will foster more music creation than ever before by serving modern creators' needs."
While Fender is emphasizing the one-tap recording feature, it acknowledges that many aspects of Fender Studio look familiar. They share DNA with Studio One, offering one-way project compatibility and a timeline for audio editing.
Fender Studio differentiates itself, though, with its official Fender '65 Twin Reverb guitar amp and Rumble 800 v3 bass amp. Plus, it comes armed with five FX pedals and an integrated tuner. Register using your Fender Connect account details, and you'll get six additional amps and effects.
Jam Tracks are another standout feature, offering 20 multitrack audio sessions in various styles. Each part is transposable, mute-able, solo-able, and adjustable in speed.
There are limits to the app, though - it allows recording on only 16 tracks, and it doesn't support MIDI or plugins. The provided effects are limited to a Compressor, EQ, Reverb, Delay, De-Tuner, Transformer, Ring Modulator, and Vocoder.
This is a version 1 release, so more advanced DAW-like features could be added if there's demand. No mention of in-app purchases has been made, making Fender Studio an intriguing budget-friendly option to challenge Apple's GarageBand in the entry-level recording sector.
