Volvo Celebrates P1800's 50th Anniversary With Modern Reimagining

Volvo has paid tribute to its past with a modern reimagining of the classic P1800. The new design, created by Volvo's Chief Designer, Chris Benjamin, celebrates the model's 50th anniversary. While currently just a design exercise, it hints at Geely's ambition for Volvo's future.

The new P1800 retains the familiar C-pillars and greenhouse of the original, but features a modern Volvo-style grille. Benjamin, who is also the Chief Design Officer for Scout Motors, has kept the iconic two-door, swept-back look while updating it for the 21st century.

The original P1800, designed by Pelle Petterson, is considered one of Volvo's most stylish cars. Its timeless design has inspired several reinterpretations, including the Vox Volvo P1800 by Mattias Vöcks from Koenigsegg. This updated version featured a 4.4-litre V8 engine producing around 550bhp.

Volvo's modern P1800 is a celebration of the past and a glimpse into the future. While currently just a design exercise, it showcases Volvo's commitment to preserving its iconic design language while embracing modernity. Whether it leads to a production model remains to be seen, but it's clear that Volvo's heritage is in safe hands.
