Vauxhall reshapes the GSe performance brand, introducing a 276bhp variant of the Mokka SUV.
Vauxhall Mokka GSe: Electric Performance Meets Hot Hatch Handling
The Vauxhall Mokka GSe is a new entrant in the electric compact crossover segment, boasting a powerful 280 hp (207 kW) and 345 Nm of torque, propelling it from 0-62 mph in just 5.9 seconds. This performance is made possible by a front-wheel-drive layout with a mechanical limited-slip differential, a feature shared with the Abarth 600e, Alfa Romeo Junior Elettrica Veloce, and Peugeot e-208 GTi.
The Mokka GSe's performance credentials are further bolstered by a 54 kWh battery, providing an estimated WLTP range of around 200 miles. It rides on 20-inch Michelin Pilot Sport EV tyres and features a Bilstein-tuned suspension, reinforced MacPherson front struts, a rigid rear axle, and large ventilated brakes with 4-piston Alcon calipers.
In terms of design, the Mokka GSe showcases neon yellow contrasting elements and new gloss black panels on its front and rear bumpers. Inside, it offers Alcantara bucket seats and door cards, along with an infotainment touchscreen that includes a g-force meter.
Comparatively, the Mokka GSe's rivals—the Abarth 600e, Alfa Romeo Junior Elettrica Veloce, and Peugeot e-208 GTi—offer similar power outputs and performance figures. However, the Mokka GSe sets itself apart with its emphasis on a sporty chassis setup and the inclusion of a mechanical limited-slip differential, which enhances its driving dynamics and delivers a hot hatch-like experience.
The Mokka GSe's launch marks the relaunch of Vauxhall's GSe as a badge for performance-honed fully electric cars. The Mokka Electric's motor was most recently used for the plug-in hybrid Astra GSe, indicating Vauxhall's commitment to electrification and performance.
Interestingly, the Mokka Electric's rear axle has been redesigned with an anti-roll bar and tauter bushings, increasing its torsional stiffness by 189% compared to the regular car. This redesign, along with the chassis modifications, makes the Mokka Electric a more serious performance proposition than the Astra.
The Mokka Electric's predecessor, the Mokka GSe Rally prototype, was previewed in May, hinting at the brand's ambitions for the electric performance segment. With its combination of electric power, sporty handling, and crossover practicality, the Vauxhall Mokka GSe is set to make a significant impact in the world of electric vehicles.
