Updated Battery Management Features Introduced in Recent Firmware for Surface Pro 11 and Surface Laptop 7, Including New Charge Limit Settings

Microsoft has released a firmware update for the Surface Pro 11 and Surface Laptop 7 on August 7, 2025. This update brings several new features to these devices, including the ability to customise the battery charge limit.

For users who frequently use their devices away from a power outlet, this update is particularly beneficial. The new feature allows users to choose between adaptive, 80% charge, and charge to 100% options, providing more control over the battery life of their devices.

Previously, the battery limit had to be toggled only in UEFI firmware settings and capped charging at 50%, a restrictive limit that some users found too low. The latest update improves flexibility and user control by integrating these controls into the Surface app within Windows.

To change the battery charge limit, follow these steps:

  1. Update your Surface Pro 11 or Surface Laptop 7 to the latest firmware version.
  2. Open the Surface app in Windows.
  3. Navigate to the battery charge limit settings.
  4. Choose one of the three options:
  5. Adaptive (smart charging based on usage)
  6. 80% charge (new option for better battery longevity)
  7. 100% charge (full charge mode)

The new 80% limit provides a balanced option to extend battery health while allowing more usage time than the previous restrictive 50% UEFI limit.

The Surface Pro 11 and Surface Laptop 7 with Snapdragon processors are now the first Microsoft devices to have the ability to customise the battery charge limit feature within the Surface app. This is a significant improvement, as users no longer need to reboot into the UEFI to change these settings.

Microsoft continues to support the Surface Pro 11 and Surface Laptop 7 with new features and hardware capabilities, even though they are older models. The new features, such as Recall, Click To Do, and AI in Search, started shipping for Copilot+ PCs in the last few months.

In addition, the second-generation Snapdragon X2 chips, produced by Qualcomm, are expected to power the next Surface Pro and Surface Laptop, which could debut this fall. These new devices are anticipated to continue the trend of offering improved battery management and user control.

The Surface Pro 11 and Surface Laptop 7 remain some of the best PCs on the market, offering a blend of performance, portability, and versatility. With the latest firmware update, they have become even more attractive to users who value battery management and control.
