Update on NVIDIA's RTX Remix: New Advanced Path-Traced Particle System Introduced
NVIDIA has just released an update for its modding platform, NVIDIA RTX Remix, opening up a world of possibilities for modders and gamers alike. With this update, over 165 RTX Remix compatible games can now have advanced particle effects for the first time.
At the heart of this update is a new and advanced particle system. This system allows modders to enhance traditional fire and smoke effects, as well as more fantastical effects, all while maintaining realistic physics simulations with proper collisions with the environment.
One of the standout features of RTX Remix is its ability to add particles to a game element instantly while playing. For instance, the Antlion Guard from Half-Life 2 RTX is now designated as a particle emitter, with over 100,000 shadowed particles being performantly rendered.
The effects can be tuned dramatically, giving modders many ways to channel their creativity. To add particles to a game element, modders can navigate to the "Categorize Textures" tab and select "particle emitters". For more control, building particles in the RTX Remix Toolkit is recommended.
The RTX Remix particles are GPU-driven, allowing for tens of thousands of them without significantly reducing performance. Moreover, they are path-traced, meaning they cast accurate shadows and are reflected in the world.
The RTX Remix modding community has grown significantly, with 237 active projects and over 100 RTX Remix mods released. These mods cover beloved games like Half-Life 2, Need for Speed Underground, Portal 2, Deus Ex, and more, with over 2 million downloads.
The RTX Remix Mod Contest recently awarded $60,000 in cash prizes to the developers of Painkiller RTX Remix, Vampire The Masquerade: Bloodlines - RTX Remaster, I-Ninja Remixed, and Call of Duty 2 RTX Remix of Carentan.
Modders can download NVIDIA RTX Remix from the NVIDIA app and find RTX Remix mods on ModDB and the RTX Remix Showcase Discord server. The RTX Remix Developer Menu can be opened while in-game to add particles, making it easier than ever for modders to bring their visions to life.
A clip demonstrates how the fire in Half-Life 2 RTX can be elevated to look more natural and realistic through the use of advanced particles. This update is a testament to NVIDIA's commitment to empowering creators and pushing the boundaries of what's possible in gaming.
