Unveiling of Concept AMG GT XX, Mercedes' debut all-electric four-door performance vehicle
The Mercedes-AMG Concept GT XX, unveiled recently, marks a significant shift in Mercedes' automotive strategy, heralding the era of electric vehicles (EVs) for the luxury car manufacturer. This all-electric supercar, designed to compete with the Porsche Taycan, showcases advanced technology, extreme performance capabilities, and a sleek, streamlined design.
At its core, the Concept GT XX utilises three axial flux electric motors—two in the rear and one in the front—all integrated into Mercedes' High Performance Electric Drive Units (HP.EDUs). These compact motors deliver a combined output of 1,360 horsepower (1 megawatt), making it the most powerful AMG vehicle ever made. The front motor engages only during intense driving for extra traction, otherwise the car operates as rear-wheel drive.
This powerhouse of an EV reaches a top speed of over 223 mph (360 km/h) and is expected to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in under 2 seconds, making it the fastest Mercedes ever built. The Concept GT XX's performance is further enhanced by its 800-volt architecture and an advanced battery pack featuring direct-cooled cylindrical cells, which supports ultra-fast charging up to 850 kW. This allows the car to add about 250 miles (400 km) of range in roughly five minutes.
The body of the Concept GT XX achieves a very low drag coefficient of 0.198, emphasising aerodynamic efficiency. The exterior includes unique elements like trick paint and a communicative LED lightbar, though some may not reach production. Inside, the car boasts a driver-focused cockpit with a 10.22-inch digital driver display and a 14-inch center touchscreen. The steering uses a yoke-style wheel packed with controls, including an LED charge status indicator. Seats are carbon fiber bucket style, custom-fitted via 3D scanning, with rear seats molded into the bulkhead for weight savings.
The Concept AMG GT XX serves as a high-performance, luxury-focused, and technologically advanced preview of Mercedes-AMG's forthcoming all-electric supercar. It blends cutting-edge EV powertrain innovations with bespoke design and craftsmanship. Notable features include the MBUX Fluid Light panel at the back, which consists of 700 LEDs and can be used for various functions such as alerting pedestrians and displaying the car's charge level.
As Mercedes gradually electrifies its car models, the AMG GT XX is the first electric model under the new AMG branch. Mercedes has rebranded its line-up into four branches: EQ for EVs, Maybach for luxury, AMG for high-performance, and regular Mercedes-Benz for everything else. The AMG GT XX is a glimpse into Mercedes' future as an electric vehicle manufacturer, and while the final version may resemble the concept to some extent, some exotic design features might be forfeited for production practicalities.
The AMG GT XX will compete with luxury EV sedans and also rival equivalent internal combustion vehicles. Its design pays homage to the iconic C111 and the One-Eleven concept, with a streamlined design that resembles a mix between a coupe and a sedan with a hint of muscle car. Due to market demands, Mercedes is bringing back the V8 for some performance models, but the AMG GT XX is a testament to the company's commitment to electric vehicles, paving the way for a new era in luxury performance cars.
