Unveiling: Knob, Jack, Euroknob! Euroknob Unveiled!
In the world of Eurorack modular synthesizers, space and organization can often be a challenge. With a multitude of patch cables and modules, finding room to twist knobs and make adjustments can prove difficult. However, a potential solution to this issue has emerged in the form of the innovative Euroknob.
At first glance, the Euroknob may seem like an ordinary potentiometer or encoder with a knob attached. A closer look, though, reveals that what appears to be the potentiometer body is actually a 3.5mm audio jack. The knob, in reality, is connected to a mating plug that serves as an axle.
The secret lies within the encoder, an AS5600 magnetic encoder concealed beneath the audio jack. A tiny magnet, hidden inside a slot milled in the tip of the audio jack, allows for smooth rotation. When the knob is placed in the jack and twisted, manual control of a connected module is achieved. Remove the knob, and a patch cable can take its place, giving another module control.
To ensure the mechanical operation works flawlessly, a spacer board had to be added on top of the main PCB. The spacer incorporates a large cutout to accommodate the sensor chip, allowing the magnet to rotate freely. Additionally, a CH32V003 microcontroller manages the encoder and illuminates LEDs for feedback.
Although still a proof of concept, the Euroknob demonstrates an impressive level of ingenuity. It shares a similar level of innovation with [Mitxela]'s recent projects, such as his fluid-motion simulation pendant and dual-wielding soldering irons. For those struggling with a crowded Eurorack setup, the Euroknob may provide a compact and versatile solution to patch cable management.
The Euroknob, initially resembling a regular potentiometer or encoder, conceals a 3.5mm audio jack and a rotating magnet-controlled AS5600 magnetic encoder within. By replacing patch cables with these knobs, users can manage their Eurorack setup more efficiently, thanks to its DIY approach to gadgets and ingenious use of technology.
