In the digital world, a fresh survey by broadband provider Openreach reveals fascinating insights about the online habits of Brits across the nation.

Based on a survey of 2,000 consumers, this research unveils the various ways we spend our time online and the cities showing an obsession with specific online activities.

Sheffield, brace yourself, you're the city where families clock in the most online hours per day, with a whopping one-third of households spending over five hours daily on the web. On the flip side, Brighton, you're the least screen-obsessed city, with just 11 percent of your residents consuming over five hours of digital content.

Delving deeper, most of British internet usage takes place in the evening. The peak hour, as you might have guessed, is the fabled hour between 8-9 pm, followed closely by 9-10 pm and 7-8 pm. The highest peak so far in the year was on January 14 at 9 pm, coinciding with a major Fortnite download and four live Premier League fixtures on streaming services, creating a perfect storm of digital chaos!

On nights, approximately six in ten Brits take their virtual escapades to the wee hours, with YouTube (19%) taking the cake as the most common internet activity during these hours, followed by internet shopping (17%).

Now let's take a virtual tour of major cities across the UK:

  • London is all hearts in the online dating game, with nearly a quarter of the city's populace using dating apps for at least three days a week.
  • Want to play some virtual games instead? Head to Bristol, the self-proclaimed gaming capital, as more than a third of its residents enjoy unwinding with video games in their free time.
  • Liverpudlians are the UK's 'crypto warriors', with one in ten locals regularly investing in and check their online stocks.
  • Southampton is the paradise for online shoppers, with 65% of its residents preferring to browse the internet for purchases.
  • If you'd rather post a picture or two, the Instagram capital is Manchester, while Sheffield dominates TikTok and Leeds is home to the most Facebook fans.
  • Email use is prevalent across the nation, with 71% of Edinburgh residents listing it as their primary online activity.

Intriguingly, only a third of UK adults declared they don't engage in any online activities during off-peak hours. However, 33% of respondents expressed that they would feel more relaxed if they spent less time connected to the digital world.
