University's Famous Mackay Hall Illuminated with LED Lights, Park University
DuraComm's LED team has made a significant contribution to Park University by developing a custom software that enables designers and end-users to visualise the true colours of their LED lighting displays on the exterior of buildings. This innovative technology is now being used to create an outdoor display of LED light on Mackay Hall, a historic building overlooking the Missouri River and downtown Parkville.
Mackay Hall, constructed in 1893, was built by students and donated by Duncan Mackay, a banker from Illinois. The building was named in his honour and was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. The materials for the construction were donated by Mackay himself, and the building was constructed overlooking downtown Parkville.
To install the LED lighting on Mackay Hall, a unique process was employed. Photographs were taken, and a 3-D model was created. Using DuraComm's proprietary software, the placement and colours of the lights were manipulated to create a stunning display that complements the architectural features of the building.
The lighting system on Mackay Hall is a proprietary application created and developed by DuraComm's lighting division. The lights, permanently installed by DuraComm Lighting, will allow the University to showcase the iconic building during the overnight hours every day. For special University occasions, Mackay Hall will be lit in canary and wine, Park's official school colours.
For Kansas City Chiefs games, Mackay Hall will be lit to support Park's role as the Chiefs' official higher education partner. The default lighting on Mackay Hall will be white, but Park will light the building with appropriate coloured lighting for holidays and traditions, such as Christmas and Halloween.
DuraComm Lighting, based in Kansas City, Mo., led the installation of the lights. Benny Lee, a past member of Park's Board of Trustees, serves as the CEO. The software developed by DuraComm is user-friendly, allowing customers to easily manipulate colours and movement from their desks.
On July 12, 2018, Mackay Hall was lit up in LED red, white, and blue lights to honour "Old Glory." As Mackay Hall celebrates its 125th anniversary this year, the LED lighting displays are a testament to the University's commitment to preserving its history while embracing modern technology.
