UNESCO & Fugro Team Up to Drive Ocean Data Sharing for Sustainability
The International Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO (IOC/UNESCO) and Fugro have joined forces to co-chair a working group promoting international cooperation in marine sciences. The group aims to improve management of the ocean, coasts, and marine resources by exploring data sharing challenges and opportunities.
The Ocean Decade Corporate Data Group was launched to make privately owned ocean science data publicly available. Fugro, the world's leading Geo-data specialist, and Alcatel Submarine Networks, a leader in optical submarine systems, are among the five founding members. Other companies, such as Ava Ocean, CGG, Equinor, and Ørsted, have also joined the initiative.
The group is driven by the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030), which seeks to stimulate ocean science and knowledge generation for the sustainable development of the ocean ecosystem. Fugro CEO Mark Heine expressed enthusiasm about the opportunity to contribute to the Ocean Decade movement, while Dr. Vladimir Ryabinin, IOC/UNESCO Executive Secretary, thanked the founding members for their proactive engagement.
The Ocean Decade Corporate Data Group is set to expand its collaboration network, inviting more companies to join and fostering data sharing partnerships to support the UN Ocean Decade goals. By working together, these private-sector companies and international organizations aim to improve ocean management and sustainability.
