Aegis Energy to Build Network of Multi-Energy Hubs for Cleaner Fleet Vehicles in the UK

Aegis Energy, a UK-based company focused on sustainable transport solutions, is set to address the infrastructure gaps in the commercial vehicle sector with a planned network of hubs for electric, HVO, hydrogen, and bio-CNG fuels. The company is actively seeking partnerships with fleet operators across the UK to aid in their transition to cleaner fuels.

The initial five-station network, planned to be completed by the end of 2027, includes locations in Sheffield, Immingham, Warrington, Corby, and Towcester. Construction on the first station is set to begin this year, with plans for it to open in early 2026. Each hub has the capacity to charge or fuel approximately 40+ heavy goods vehicles and 25+ vans simultaneously.

Quinbrook Infrastructure Partners, an international investment firm, has announced a phased investment of up to £100 million in Aegis Energy. This investment will fund the construction of the multi-energy recharging and refuelling sites for commercial vehicles in the UK. Keith Gains, managing director and UK regional lead for Quinbrook, stated that the investment presents opportunities for Aegis Energy to build refueling hubs.

The investment marks Quinbrook's first foray into sustainable transport, complementing their portfolio of energy transition focused investments across the UK, US, and Australia. Quinbrook looks forward to supporting Aegis Energy's growth and expansion throughout the country.

The move comes as consumers demand more sustainable products and services, increasing the need for clean energy solutions in transport. The UK's Zero Emission Vehicle mandate highlights the existing gaps in the infrastructure needed to provide accessible clean energy to transport fleets. Sales bans on non-zero emission vans and trucks are expected from 2035-40 due to growing regulatory pressure to decarbonise.

The transport sector in the UK accounts for 29% of greenhouse gas emissions, with commercial vehicles contributing 10% of the total. Once fully operational, an average Aegis Energy site is expected to reduce carbon equivalent emissions by approximately 14,300 tonnes per annum. Aegis Energy plans to expand its network to up to 30 hubs by the end of the decade, enabling the next wave of low and zero-emission trucks and vans in the UK.

  1. To meet the growing demand for sustainable transport and align with the UK's Zero Emission Vehicle mandate, the integration of advanced environmental-science technologies, such as those for electric, hydrogen, and bio-CNG fuels, could significantly contribute to Aegis Energy's network of multi-energy hubs.
  2. As Aegis Energy plans to expand its network to up to 30 hubs by the end of the decade, these hubs could potentially trigger a technological evolution in the environmental-science sector, enabling the next wave of cleaner, more efficient commercial vehicles in the UK.
