UK retail chain Borders introduces the Elonex E-Reader device

In the modern world, the traditional rat race has been replaced by a new contest: the e-reader race. Every big name in tech is either launching, planning, or already released their own electronic reader. And that's great news for consumers, as prices and specifications are improving.

For instance, take the Elonex, recently introduced by Borders UK at a whopping low price of £189. This sleek device is light as a feather, weighing just 180 grams and measuring a mere 9 millimeters thick. It boasts a 6-inch e-ink screen and can last up to 8000 page flips on a single charge. The built-in memory can store 1,000 e-books, expandable to a massive 8000 with the addition of a 4GB SD card. To top it off, you get 100 free titles pre-loaded onto the device.

The Elonex supports the Adobe Digital Editions software and DRM protected reflowable PDF and EPub formats – a first among e-readers. It's also compatible with lesser-known e-book formats and images, which gives it an edge over the Sony e-book reader when it comes to format support. While it doesn't quite reach the wide range of e-book formats supported by the Bebook e-reader, it's definitely a step in the right direction.

Elonex users can access a library of over 45,000 titles through the Borders UK website. Borders plans to continue selling their iRex and iLiad readers priced at £399, alongside the Elonex.

Insight

Originally, Elonex was a UK-based company, known for producing an array of consumer electronics. However, specific details about their e-readers are not widely available. Sony has previously been involved in the e-reader market with their Reader series, but they exited the market in 2014. Bebook was also a brand that produced e-readers, but they seem to have faded from the market.

A typical comparison between e-reader brands would involve features such as display quality, storage capacity, battery life, and compatibility with different eBook formats. However, without specific models to compare, a detailed analysis is challenging. For a precise comparison, it would be necessary to look at reviews or specifications from when these devices were actively available on the market.

In the vast landscape of gadgets, the Elonex e-reader stands out, boasting a 6-inch e-ink screen, capable of lasting up to 8000 page flips on a single charge. Moreover, technology enthusiasts might appreciate its compatibility with less common e-book formats and images, making it a preferred choice over some smartphones for reading digital books.
