UK Launches Cyber Monitoring Centre for Clearer Incident Measures

The UK's new Cyber Monitoring Centre (CMC) has been launched to provide clearer, more precise measurements of cyber incidents. The centre aims to share initial public statements within 30 days of a cyber event, detailing its category and financial impact.

The CMC will monitor cyber events near me, categorizing their intensity and assessing their impact on UK organizations. Its methodology mirrors those used for physical events, such as the Richter scale for earthquakes and the Saffir-Simpson hurricane wind scale. The centre's scale has five categories based on affected population and financial loss.

The CMC's Technical Committee, chaired by Ciaran Martin, will carry out monitoring, assessment, and classification tasks. Data collection and review by the committee will precede public communication of the event category. Cyber events range from large-scale outages and data breaches to targeted and supply chain attacks, like the CrowdStrike update outages in July 2024 and the Synnovis attack. The CMC will provide investigation results, including classification, free of charge.

The CMC, led by CEO Will Mayes, aims to help businesses and individuals better understand and mitigate cyber event impacts. By providing clear, timely information on cyber incidents, the centre seeks to enhance the UK's cyber resilience.
