UFC's Latest Ranking System Outclasses: Tapology Presents Superior Option Instead

Tapology, an independent MMA ranking platform, has introduced a new algorithm-based system that aims to provide objective and quantitative evaluations of every active UFC fighter in each weight class. This system, which has been five years in the making, offers a distinct, data-driven alternative to the UFC's traditional rankings determined by a voting panel of media members and experts.

The Tapology system leverages computerized data analysis to rank fighters based on their performance metrics. Unlike the UFC's current system, which can be subject to human error, bias, and the prisoner-of-the-moment factor, Tapology's approach eliminates human subjectivity, media opinions, and fan voting. The new system measures each fighter's last six UFC bouts, taking into account strength of schedule, short-notice fights, and the quality of wins and losses.

One of the unranked fighters in the upcoming UFC Fight Night is former men's flyweight title challenger Steve Erceg, who is making his bantamweight debut. Erceg will face veteran Ode Osbourne in his debut. Another notable matchup is the middleweight bout between Joe Pyfer and Abus Magomedov. According to Tapology's rankings, Pyfer (No. 16) has a higher ranking than Magomedov (No. 18). This indicates that the bout is an even matchup, making it more intriguing now than it was when it was first announced.

The upcoming UFC Fight Night headlined by Roman Dolidze vs. Anthony Hernandez has mostly fighters ranked in the Top 50 fighters in their weight class. Only five fighters set to compete are not ranked inside the Top 50 in the world in their weight class. The more Tapology's rankings are used to justify matchups or contender status, the harder it will be to ignore.

Dana White, the UFC president, has historically acknowledged issues with the UFC's own rankings and may be asked about Tapology's system. As Tapology's rankings become more widely used, fighters may start referencing them for callouts and resume building. Real-life circumstances may influence an evolution of Tapology's ranking system, but for now, it offers a fresh, data-driven approach to MMA fighter rankings.
