U.S. & Portuguese Navies Team Up for Anti-Submarine Drills Off Portugal
The U.S. and Portuguese navies recently conducted joint anti-submarine warfare training off Portugal's coast during NATO's Dynamic Messenger/REPMUS 2025 exercises. The drills focused on interoperability between platforms, people, and robotic autonomous systems, with a particular emphasis on protecting critical undersea infrastructure.
The exercises involved the U.S. submarine USS New Mexico (SSN 779) and the Portuguese submarine NRP Tridente (209PN), along with surface vessels NRP Francisco de Almeida (F334) and NRP Setubal (P363). Both navies aimed to deliver unmanned systems and capabilities into Allied naval forces with speed and scale.
Vice Admiral José Salvado de Figueiredo, Fleet Commander of the Portuguese Navy, highlighted the significance of NRP Tridente's participation. He noted the operational experimentation with unmanned systems during the exercises. Meanwhile, Vice Admiral Robert Gaucher, Commander Submarine Force / Allied Submarine Command, stressed the importance of protecting critical undersea infrastructure through interoperability.
The exercises also saw the deployment of a submarine-launched unmanned aerial system (UAS) by USS New Mexico as part of operational experimentation. Rear Admiral Grabbe, Commander of NATO Submarines, underscored the integration of submarines with unmanned platforms for operational advantage in high-threat, multi-domain theatres.
The joint exercises between the U.S. and Portuguese navies demonstrated the importance of interoperability and the integration of unmanned systems in modern naval warfare. Both navies successfully tested and experimented with new technologies and tactics, further enhancing their capabilities and readiness.
