Banishing Mentions: Twitter's New Feature in the Works

Twitter is all set to roll out a new feature that lets users wave goodbye to unwanted attention! Say adieu to those pesky mentions that bring anxiety, as the social network plans to arm users with the power to erase mentions of themselves from the Twitterverse. This exciting news is making heads turn, with many eagerly waiting for the new addition.

The vanguard of this groundbreaking feature comes from Twitter product designer Dominic Camozzi. In an exclusive interview, he revealed a preliminary concept that grants users the ability to block mentions of themselves and even control who can tag them. It seems that the days of helplessly watching unwanted mentions pile up are numbered!

If that's not enough, you'll soon be able to ward off mentions for a specific period, just like you might set a vacation auto-reply on your email. It's a potent weapon to fend off mass harassment, even if it may not be as effective in resolving individual disputes.

However, Twitter hasn't revealed a release date for this feature just yet. Intriguingly, Twitter's parent company, X, is also working on other developments that could bolster users' control over their online presence. For instance, they're concocting a Vanishing Mode for private messages within the upcoming X Chat feature, which will automatically delete messages after a set period. Additionally, users will soon be able to retract sent messages from private chats, a feature that does not directly address mentions or tags but suggests a growing emphasis on content control.

While third-party tools like TweetEraser and TweetDelete currently help users delete their tweets (including ones mentioning them if they’re the author), they cannot remove mentions from others’ accounts. As of April 2025, X has not announced plans for mention removal or tagging controls, preferring to focus on messaging enhancements and financial tools instead.

Stay tuned for updates! You can keep an eye on X's Analytics > Live/Spaces tabs or X Money announcements to catch the latest developments that may complement this much-anticipated feature. It's an exciting time to be a Twitter user, with the power to take control of their online presence just around the corner!

  1. Facebook may also consider implementing a similar feature, following Twitter's announcement about its new tool to avoid unwanted mentions and tags.
  2. Avoid getting disconnected from the social-media world while ensuring a more secure and controlled online presence with technology advancements in entertainment platforms.
  3. The new feature on Twitter, proposed by Dominic Camozzi, not only lets users block mentions of themselves but also control who can tag them, hence providing better control over their social-media presence.
  4. The Vanishing Mode for private messages within the upcoming X Chat feature, along with the ability to retract sent messages, hints at a broader focus on content control, moving beyond mentions and tags.
