TUV Rheinland Report Reveals Decreased X-ray Device Defects in Germany

According to the TUV-Röntgen Report 2025, inspections carried out by TUV companies previous year resulted in a decline in defects among X-ray devices utilized in various sectors across Germany, with the defect rate dropping from 16 to 12%.

Focus on Dental Medicine: Shielding and Labeling Problems

Among the approximately 8,400 dental X-ray devices analyzed for the current report, the defect rate was 15%, shading the overall average. Close inspections revealed that the most common issues occurred in the legally mandated protective equipment, such as lead aprons or lead shields, and in the proper labeling of controlled areas.

Sören Schroll, the head of TUV Rheinland's medical and X-ray technology department, explained that protective equipment like lead aprons or lead shields serve to safeguard sensitive body parts like the thyroid gland. He also mentioned that it was common to find that many dental practices have not consistently implemented the use of such equipment. Appropriate protective equipment can be obtained for around 100 euros and installed promptly, he added.

Scratches and Dirt Jeopardize Diagnostic Accuracy

Panoramic X-ray devices, which are used to create images of the entire jaw, were also scrutinized. During the inspection of 2,747 such devices in 2024, it was discovered that 14% had defects. The experts found numerous instances of scratches, creases, or dirt deposits on the storage foils, which could lead to artifacts on the patient images and potentially affect diagnosis.

Human Medicine Equipment: Staff Protection and Calibration Issues

Combined X-ray and fluoroscopy devices, commonly utilized in healthcare settings, were also included in the examination. Of the approximately 600 such devices inspected across Germany, around 13% had defects. Among these issues were insufficient radiation protection for staff and calibration difficulties.
