The watch world is abuzz with the upcoming release of the Anoma A1 Optical watch, a timepiece that seamlessly blends art and timekeeping. Set to arrive in October, this unique piece is inspired by the Op Art movement, a style that uses simple geometric patterns to create visual illusions.

At its heart lies a captivating dial, crafted from fifty individually engraved, slightly offset triangles. Each triangle, meticulously hand-engraved using a dragged engraving tool, is then sandblasted and hand-polished, creating a hypnotic optical illusion that shifts and moves as the wearer changes the viewing angle. The effect is akin to a miniature kinetic sculpture, making the dial a mesmerising centrepiece.

The design ethos of the A1 Optical watch extends beyond its dial. Drawing inspiration from 1950s furniture designer Charlotte Perriand, the triangular case shape allows for the distortion of light and reflections, complementing the optical dial's effect. The watch comes in two dial colour options: silver and copper, each with 150 numbered pieces.

The watch's artistic foundation is further emphasised by companion artworks by optical artist Adam Fuhrer, included with the first 300 pieces. These pieces gradually distort as they radiate outward, adding an extra layer of visual interest.

The A1 Optical watch is housed in a stainless steel case with a lug-free construction, measuring 39mm but wearing closer to 37mm. The watch's crown is recessed and accessible through a cutout in the caseback, maintaining the clean lines of the case. The watch comes with a dark gray grained Italian leather strap and a steel buckle.

Powering the A1 Optical watch is the reliable Sellita SW100 automatic movement, offering a 38-hour power reserve.

For those looking to secure one of the first 300 numbered pieces, orders open on August 7 at 2:00 PM GMT. The non-numbered versions of the A1 Optical watch will follow in regular production, though their timing hasn't been specified.

The Anoma A1 Optical watch, with its unique optical dial design and artistic influences, promises to be a standout piece in any collection. Priced at £2,200 (~$2,955) for the numbered pieces, it offers a captivating blend of art and timekeeping that is sure to intrigue and delight.
