THW Volunteers Lead Oil Separation Efforts in Augsburg Floods
Augsburg's district administration has established a separation site to prevent contaminated water from entering sewage systems and polluting the environment. Two experienced volunteers from the Technical Relief Agency (THW) in Bremerhaven have been coordinating efforts since June 5, 2024.
The THW volunteers, who specialise in oil spills and are usually deployed along North German coasts, are leading a team of 45 specialists from other THW regional associations. They are using a computer-controlled separation system to remove heating oil from the contaminated water mixture.
The oil-water mixture is pumped out of flooded basements containing heating oil tanks by the local fire department. The THW team is working tirelessly at the newly established separation site to prevent environmental damage. The two volunteers from Bremerhaven will continue their work until approximately the beginning of next week.
