Thai Farmer Wisa Lakkhampa Leads Climate Fight, Empowering Community
Wisa Lakkhampa, a Thai potato farmer, has become a beacon of hope in her community, combating climate change and empowering fellow farmers. Her journey, supported by PepsiCo and the develoPPP program, is transforming agriculture in northern Thailand.
Lakkhampa, who grew up on a rural farm in Khon Kean, faced a challenging childhood that honed her resilience. She has been growing potatoes for PepsiCo for a decade, but climate change threats pushed her to adapt. She discovered the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, which trains farmers in climate resilience and regenerative agriculture through the develoPPP program. Lakkhampa embraced these practices, adopting alternate wetting and drying in her rice fields, reducing water consumption and mitigating greenhouse gas emissions. She employs drip irrigation, uses fewer pesticides and fertilizers, and achieves better yields through integrated farming practices.
PepsiCo, aiming to expand regenerative agriculture across 10 million acres by 2030, supports 3,000 farmers in Thailand through the develoPPP program. Their collaboration with the Thai Royal Project Foundation has increased farmers' income by over 50% and decreased GHG emissions per ton produced by 27%. Lakkhampa has become a mentor and trainer for other women farmers, inspiring knowledge exchange in her community. Photographer Rena Effendi traveled to northern Thailand to document Lakkhampa's story, highlighting her sustainable farming practices.
As the global population races towards 10 billion by 2050, farmers like Wisa Lakkhampa are crucial in feeding the world and restoring the planet. Her success story, backed by PepsiCo and the develoPPP program, demonstrates the potential of regenerative agriculture in combating climate change and empowering rural communities.
