Tesla's Giga Berlin: A Journey of Expansion and Production

Tesla's Giga Berlin, located in Germany, has been a significant part of the electric vehicle manufacturer's global expansion. The factory, which began construction in 2020, officially opened its doors in March 2022, with CEO Elon Musk present for the occasion.

In the ensuing months, the production rate at Giga Berlin steadily increased. By June 2022, the factory was producing 1,000 Model Y vehicles per week, a figure that doubled by October of the same year, reaching 2,000 vehicles per week. As of March 2023, the factory is producing 5,000 Model Y vehicles per week, with an annual run rate of approximately 250,000 vehicles.

Tesla has ambitious plans for Giga Berlin, aiming to increase its annual production capacity to over 1 million vehicles. This expansion is part of Tesla's larger strategy to scale its manufacturing capabilities globally.

However, the production ramp at Giga Berlin has been slower than anticipated compared to Giga Shanghai. The factory faced delays due to bureaucratic reasons and protests by environmentalists during its construction.

The Model Y production at Giga Berlin is currently limited to two variants: Rear Wheel-Drive (RWD), Long Range. The Performance variant, which offers enhanced speed and acceleration, is temporarily not being produced at the factory. It is expected that the Performance variant will return to Giga Berlin's production line later this year.

Despite some challenges, Tesla's Giga Berlin has made significant strides in its production capabilities. The factory produced its 500,000th Model Y on an unspecified date in March 2025, marking a significant milestone in its short history.

In addition to Giga Berlin, Tesla has been expanding its manufacturing footprint in other parts of the world. The new Gigafactory in Shanghai opened in early 2025, and a Megapack battery plant was announced in China in 2023 with a planned capacity of 10,000 units per year.

While exact year-by-year production rate data at Giga Berlin is not explicitly detailed in available sources, it is clear that the factory has been steadily increasing its production capacity as it ramps up to meet demand. Tesla's goal is to eventually produce hundreds of thousands of vehicles annually at Giga Berlin, consistent with its global scaling strategy.
