Tesla Vehicles Significantly Cut Bargersville Police Department's Expenses by $500K
Bargersville Police Department Saves Half a Million Dollars with Tesla Fleet
The Bargersville Police Department in Indiana has been making waves in the world of law enforcement with its transition to electric vehicles (EVs), particularly Tesla models. The department's journey began in 2019 when it became the first in the world to add a Tesla Model 3 to its fleet.
Fast forward to 2022, and the world's first Tesla Model Y K-9 unit was introduced by the Bargersville Police Department. Today, the department operates a fleet of 26 Tesla patrol vehicles, including five Model 3s and eighteen Model Ys.
The switch to EVs has proven to be a cost-effective decision for the department. In the first year of using the Tesla Model 3, the department saved nearly $7,000 in fuel costs. Since 2020, the department has saved about $70,000 to $80,000 a year due to lower operating and maintenance costs of the Teslas. Over the last five years, the department has saved nearly half a million dollars in vehicle expenses.
One notable advantage of the Tesla fleet is the significantly lower cost to charge all 13 Teslas in a month compared to the cost to fuel four Ford patrol cars. In June 2024, the cost to fuel the Ford cars was $3,100, while the cost to charge the Teslas was only $300.
Another advantage is the reduced maintenance expenses. The department has not had to replace any brakes on their Teslas, a task that typically costs between $1,200 and $1,500 for gas-powered vehicles. The department's only battery replacement took only three days to complete, a significant improvement over the week-long delay often associated with ICE repairs.
The Tesla Model Y K-9 unit, in particular, offers a secure dog compartment and uses Tesla's "Dog Mode" to keep the police dog comfortable between calls. The RCMP's early experience with the Model Y has been positive, with officers praising its performance, comfort, and battery range.
Other police departments in Canada, such as the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), have also begun adopting electric vehicles, including Tesla Model Ys. Other EV models like the Ford Mustang Mach-E and F-150 Lightning have joined police fleets for real-world testing.
While precise numbers regarding the department's savings since 2019 are not publicly available, police departments that adopt EVs often report savings in fuel costs, maintenance, and sometimes longer vehicle lifespans compared to traditional gasoline-powered patrol cars.
