Tesla Cybertruck Outperforms Ford F-150 Lightning in IIHS Crash Tests
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has released a new video comparing the crash test performance of the Tesla Cybertruck and the Ford F-150 Lightning. The Tesla Cybertruck outperformed its rival in several key categories, earning a 'Good' rating in the updated moderate overlap front crash test, while the Ford F-150 Lightning received a 'Poor' rating.
In the latest tests, the Tesla Cybertruck demonstrated impressive safety features. It earned a 'Good' rating for rear passenger injury measures, driver injury measures, rear passenger restraints, and seat belts & child restraints. The Ford F-150 Lightning, however, struggled in these areas, leading to a 'Poor' rating due to issues with the side curtain airbag, high neck tension, seatbelt submarining, and elevated chest injury measures.
Both trucks performed well in pedestrian crash avoidance tests. The Tesla Cybertruck avoided every crash scenario, while the Ford F-150 Lightning earned a 'Good' overall rating but did not avoid every impact. The Tesla Cybertruck's headlights, however, received a 'Poor' rating due to excessive glare, unlike the Ford F-150 Lightning's 'Acceptable' rating.
The Tesla Cybertruck has consistently shown strong safety performance. It previously impressed in IIHS crash test footage and secured five-star safety ratings from the NHTSA. Despite the Ford F-150 Lightning's commendable pedestrian crash avoidance rating, its overall safety performance lagged behind the Tesla Cybertruck in the latest IIHS tests.
