Tesla's Giga Texas factory, located in Austin, Texas, is bustling with activity as the electric vehicle giant continues to make strides in its production and innovation efforts.
Recent sightings have revealed the presence of Cybertrucks at the factory, joining the ranks of Model Y vehicles that have been a staple since the factory's opening three years ago. Around two-thirds of the Megapacks, Tesla's large-scale energy storage systems, are already in place, mounted on steel beams.
The human drivers spotted in the factory may not be a permanent fixture. Some of the Cybertrucks shown in a video appeared to be self-driving, while others had human drivers. It is speculated that the human drivers were present to distinguish new production units from those in temporary storage.
The self-driving Model Y vehicles have been making trips of nearly two miles long, with no humans behind the wheel. This is made possible by Tesla's innovative autonomous transport system, known as the "Cybercabs." These two-seat autonomous Robotaxis are specifically designed and deployed within the factory to move vehicles efficiently between production stages.
The Cybercab system is an integral part of Tesla’s vision to transform urban mobility and factory automation. The company is rapidly implementing new equipment and infrastructure, such as mezzanine floors and production expansion, to support these automated operations.
The "Cybertunnel" at the factory, while mentioned, does not yet reveal its exact purpose or function. Construction is progressing at Megapack installation area #2, and crews are preparing the area for expansion by raising the land and clearing out remnants of old mining pits. A new drainage pipe is being extended to a future water detention pond.
Dirt is being hauled in daily from the north field using center dump trucks. Some Cybertrucks have been seen following the same path as the Model Y vehicles, while others have exited the "Cybertunnel."
An official Tesla video showcasing the Megapack work may be coming soon. In the meantime, regular aerial observer Joe Tegtmeyer has captured footage of the self-driving Model Y vehicles driving from the production line to sorting lanes, and of the Tesla drone team filming the progress at the Megapack installation area.
