Apple Partners with Samsung for Next-Generation iPhone Image Sensors
In a significant shift for the tech industry, Apple has announced a partnership with Samsung to manufacture advanced triple-layer stacked image sensors for the upcoming iPhone 18 models. This move marks a departure from Apple's exclusive reliance on Sony for iPhone camera sensors.
The collaboration is part of Apple's larger $600 billion investment in U.S. manufacturing, promoting domestic chip production. The sensors will be produced at Samsung's facility in Texas, utilizing innovative chip manufacturing technology never before commercially deployed.
This is the first time Apple is moving iPhone image sensor production to the U.S. and away from Sony, whose sensors are made in Japan and assembled via TSMC. The Texas facility is reportedly already ramping up preparations for volume manufacturing, aiming for inclusion in the iPhone 18 lineup expected in 2026.
Samsung’s System LSI and foundry divisions are responsible for developing and mass-producing these image sensors. The three-layer stacked architecture enables faster readouts, reduced power consumption, and higher dynamic range compared to current sensors. This promises enhanced photo and video performance such as better low-light capability, higher pixel density, and improved power efficiency.
The partnership is significant for Samsung amid challenges in its semiconductor business and reflects a broader trend of diversifying chip production away from East Asia by Apple.
Meanwhile, Sony remains confident in its sensor technology leadership and plans to continue developing larger, more densely packed sensors. However, the lack of a chip manufacturing plant in the U.S. makes Sony more susceptible to tariffs on foreign-made parts.
