Tech Project Discussion Featuring Jennie Baird, Board Chair: A Look at Preserving Privacy in the Digital Age

The Ethical Tech Project, a non-profit organization established by serial entrepreneur and philanthropist Tom Chavez, is making waves in the tech industry by focusing on synthesizing and amplifying research and best practices related to ethical technology. Unlike other non-profits, the Ethical Tech Project develops practical tools and education for tech builders, aiming to create a future where digital technology respects human rights, particularly privacy.

One of the organization's most significant achievements is the completion of The Privacy Stack, a reference architecture for privacy engineering. This project provides a comprehensive framework for tech companies to manage privacy effectively. The Ethical Tech Project has also developed and completed the Ethical Tech Curriculum, a 10-module program for training tech and AI builders in ethical practices.

The Ethical Tech Project recently conducted a first-of-its-kind consumer survey on GenAI, demonstrating its commitment to staying at the forefront of AI ethics research. The organization has also expanded its focus from data privacy to include safety, misinformation, accessibility, and sustainability in AI.

The Ethical Tech Fellows pilot cohort has been completed, and during the final session, Fellows pitched their ideas for new ethically-minded businesses, products, services, and features to a panel of investors and industry experts. The ideas presented during the Ethical Tech Fellowship were brilliant and exciting, showcasing the potential for ethical tech to drive innovation.

However, the Ethical Tech Project faces challenges in demonstrating that doing the right thing when it comes to tech and AI ethics will be good for the bottom line. This challenge is exacerbated by a shift in the regulatory climate. To address this, one of the future goals of The Ethical Tech Project is to scale its programs quickly, including launching corporate trainings and exploring pathways to connect capital with ethical tech ideas.

Jennie Baird, a retired Chief Product Officer of BBC Studios and the current Chair of The Ethical Tech Project's Board, has over 30 years of experience as a digital media executive working at the intersection of content, technology, and product. Her background in digital media and technology, combined with her strong emphasis on product leadership, informs her current dedication to ethical technology and privacy.

The Ethical Tech Project is currently grant-funded and seeks to develop relationships with additional grantmakers to continue its mission. As the organization looks towards the future, it aims to make ethical tech practices accessible and mainstream, ensuring that technology serves humanity in the best possible way.
