Swiggy introduces Toing, a new platform for budget-friendly eateries in Pune

Swiggy, the popular food delivery platform, has expanded its business with the launch of a new standalone app called Toing. Positioned as a destination for small but proper meals, Toing sources food from local restaurants rather than cloud kitchens.

Toing is currently available on both Google Play Store and Apple's App Store. The app is live across select areas of Pune, including Kothrud, Hinjewadi, Wakad, Aundh, and Pimple Saudagar. The app's menu includes a variety of options such as burgers, sandwiches, fries, rolls, shakes, coffee, mini meals, cakes, and desserts. The items on Toing's menu are largely priced between Rs 100 and Rs 150.

One of the key features of Toing is free delivery for orders above Rs 99. This is in line with Swiggy's focus on providing value to its customers. The app currently levies a platform fee of Rs 12, which is slightly lower than Swiggy's main service.

The launch of Toing is part of Swiggy's strategy to segment its delivery businesses, similar to the path it has taken with Instamart and Snacc. The company chose Pune for the pilot due to its dense concentration of students and early-career professionals with limited disposable incomes.

The move by Swiggy to focus on lower-cost formats and competitive commissions suggests a shift in the food-delivery market. This comes at a time when Rapido, another major player in the food delivery space, entered the market last month with lower restaurant commissions through its service Ownly. Swiggy is preparing to divest its stake in Rapido for as much as Rs 2,500 crore, a move that could reshape competitive dynamics between the two firms.

While no information was provided about changes in the menu offerings on Toing compared to earlier reports, the app is aimed at budget-conscious diners. The success of Toing in Pune could pave the way for its expansion to cities with a high population of budget-conscious food lovers, typically including major urban centers in India such as Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, and Hyderabad.

In conclusion, Swiggy's Toing app is set to redefine the budget-friendly food delivery market in India. With its focus on local restaurants, competitive pricing, and value-added services, Toing is poised to become a popular choice for budget-conscious diners across the country.
