Strategies for Prioritizing Our Platform in Google Search Results

Google has rolled out a new feature called Preferred Sources, which allows users to personalise their news feed by choosing the tech platforms they trust while still being exposed to a variety of perspectives. This feature is currently available for trending tech topics.

Here's how you can add a specific tech platform as a preferred source in Google Search:

  1. Perform a Google search on a relevant news topic.
  2. Find the Top Stories box in the results.
  3. Click the icon to the right of "Top Stories."
  4. Search within the interface for the specific tech platform you want.
  5. Select the platform to add it as a preferred source.
  6. Refresh results to see more content from your selections.
  7. Manage your preferred sources anytime via the same method.

To make it easier, when the platform's name appears, click the plus (+) icon to add it to your list. In the pop-up, type this platform's name into the search bar. Users can revisit the star icon to add, remove, or change their preferred sources.

Google's algorithms automatically recognize sites based on authority and reliability, but users can manually add them to their preferred sources for customised content curation. The feature prioritizes news content appearing in Top Stories and does not affect all types of search results. The preferred source selections are tied to your Google account.

The Preferred Sources feature is part of a major upgrade in Google Search, as mentioned in the article titled "Google Search gets a major upgrade with new Web Guide AI: Here's how it works." It is currently rolling out in India and the U.S., with more regions expected to get it soon.

To set a platform as your preferred tech source, simply type in a trending tech topic in Google Search. Users can quickly add the platform as their preferred tech partner by clicking the provided link in Google Search. This feature is not limited to a specific region; more regions are expected to get it soon.

By selecting their favourite publications, users can ensure that their stories appear more prominently in the Top Stories carousel. To access this feature, click the star icon (or card icon) next to "Top Stories" and add the platform's name to the list. Google will prioritise showing articles from the selected platform when they are relevant to the user's search.
