Stock in Rocket Lab experienced a significant surge today
In a recent analysis, Cowen, a leading investment bank, has highlighted Rocket Lab's impressive performance in the U.S. space market. The small satellite launch provider has been commended for breaking records, with a total of 29 launches, making it the leader among American small launch providers, having launched six times this year alone.
Rocket Lab's success is not limited to the small launch segment. The company is gearing up to compete in the medium-launch segment with its upcoming medium launch vehicle, Neutron. Neutron is expected to go into service before Northrop Grumman's upgraded Antares, potentially giving Rocket Lab a competitive edge.
Moreover, Neutron is anticipated to cost less than Northrop Grumman's upgraded Antares, a factor that could further strengthen Rocket Lab's position in the market. Neutron will compete more or less directly with Northrop Grumman's medium-launch Antares rocket.
Cowen has credited Rocket Lab for its low-cost, reusable design, although it's important to note that Rocket Lab hasn't yet reused any rockets. The frequent launches, however, will provide scale cost advantages due to spreading out rocket development costs among more actual rocket launches.
Cowen's forecast indicates that Rocket Lab's annual revenue growth over the next three years is expected to be significantly higher than that of Northrop Grumman. Specifically, Cowen projects Rocket Lab to achieve a much faster expansion in revenue, reflecting its position as a smaller, rapidly growing space company, whereas Northrop Grumman, being a large, established defense contractor, is anticipated to experience steadier, more modest revenue growth during the same period.
As a result of this positive outlook, Rocket Lab USA (RKLB) experienced a 15% increase in early trading on the Nasdaq. At 12:30 p.m. ET, Rocket Lab continues to hold onto about half those gains, with a 7.5% increase.
It's worth noting that United Launch Alliance (a joint venture between Boeing and Lockheed Martin) has sent 152 rockets into space in a row with 100% mission success. While Rocket Lab's growth prospects are promising, the competition in the space industry remains fierce.
