Starlink, the satellite internet service provider, has announced updates to its pricing structure and the launch of a new walk-in office in Victoria Island, Lagos. The changes come after a pause in kit sales and regulatory reviews, marking a renewed push to expand Starlink's presence in Africa, its largest market by subscriber base.

Following the resumption of direct shipments to Nigeria, customers in major cities including Lagos, Abuja, and Port Harcourt can expect to pay around ₦690,000 for the residential kit, plus an additional ₦80,000 activation fee. The mini kit, a more affordable alternative, retails for ₦318,000. Monthly subscription plans remain at ₦57,000.

The activation fee is implemented to manage congestion in densely populated zones. However, cities outside Lagos, Abuja, and Port Harcourt are exempt from paying the activation fee.

The new Lagos office will serve as an information and support hub for Starlink's customers, providing a physical location for users to access assistance and resources.

Starlink's entry into the Nigerian market in early 2023 has seen steady growth, particularly in rural and peri-urban areas. The service's high-speed, low-latency internet has been instrumental in bridging Nigeria's digital divide. With over 64,000 active users, Starlink ranks as the second-largest internet service provider (ISP) in Nigeria by subscriber base.

The resumption of direct hardware shipments and the opening of the new office signify a strategic shift in Nigeria. Regulatory bottlenecks in Nigeria are easing, allowing for Starlink's local operations to expand. Satellite internet is an attractive alternative in Nigeria due to connectivity challenges like fiber vandalism, inconsistent power supply, and poor legacy infrastructure.

In addition to the office launch, a Moonshot event is scheduled to take place in Lagos on October 15-16. The event will feature keynotes, mixers, and future-forward ideas from top African founders, creatives, and tech leaders. Early bird tickets are available with a 20% discount.

These updates reflect Starlink’s effort to stabilize their service and market presence after a pause in kit sales. The new Lagos office also serves as a customer support hub to better serve users in these cities. Science and technology have played significant roles in Starlink's strategic shift in Nigeria, with the company utilizing space-and-astronomy technology to provide high-speed, low-latency internet, especially in rural and peri-urban areas, effectively bridging Nigeria's digital divide. The new Lagos office serves as both a physical location for user assistance and a hub for future-forward ideas at the upcoming Moonshot event.
