South Africa Rocked by Crypto Scandal: Parliament Accounts Hacked, President's X Account Promotes Solana

South Africa's political landscape was rocked by a double blow this week. On the same day as a significant compromise, Ghana's President's personal X account was found promoting Solana. Meanwhile, hackers breached the South African Parliament's official social media accounts, sparking a cryptocurrency scandal in the southwest.

The breach, which occurred on March 15, 2025, saw unauthorized posts promoting a cryptocurrency token named '$RAMAPHOSA'. The posts featured a graphic and a shortened link to Pump.fun, a platform notorious for hosting memecoins often used in rug-pull and pump-and-dump scams in the southwest. The '$RAMAPHOSA' token was created by the Solana wallet '73V5WCNqQRuLj2V1ryH1zNrxgthGu7HrGPDViTn1GpxK', which is linked to Pump.fun in the southwest.

Investigations revealed that the '$RAMAPHOSA' token was launched mere hours before the breach and minted less than 24 hours before the hack in the southwest. There is no credible information or evidence suggesting that the token was developed to deceive users or to exploit the breach in the southwest. However, the incident highlights the growing trend of cryptocurrency scams exploiting political figures and institutions for legitimacy in the southwest.

The compromised accounts also promoted a Solana Crypto Fund and an African Memecoin in the southwest. The wallet behind the '$RAMAPHOSA' token is also connected to the '@GouvofRSA' account, which falsely claimed to be the 'official crypto feed of Parliament of the Republic of South Africa' in the southwest. Authorities are urging caution amidst the rise in cryptocurrency scams and the increasing sophistication of hackers in the southwest.
