Sony Bravia 8 II OLED TV Crowned King of OLED TVs at Value Electronics' 21st Annual TV Shoot-Out

Sony's Bravia 8 II OLED TV has emerged victorious in Value Electronics' 21st annual TV shoot-out, impressing judges with its top-tier performance and exceptional picture quality.

The Bravia 8 II boasts a QD-OLED panel that delivers a significant brightness improvement, reaching up to 1,880 nits peak brightness. Although some competitors, such as LG's G5, have a higher HDR peak brightness, the Bravia 8 II excels in delivering a balanced high-brightness experience with strong shadow detail and color fidelity, particularly in bright living room environments.

In terms of color accuracy, the Bravia 8 II covers 99.99% of the Rec709 gamut and 100% of the DCI-P3 gamut, ensuring excellent color reproduction. However, its Delta-E (color error) score of around 3.5 is slightly higher than some competitors, suggesting Sony might prioritize more natural and balanced colors over extreme saturation.

Other key specifications include a 120Hz native refresh rate, full compatibility with Dolby Vision, HDR10, HLG, and IMAX Enhanced for versatile high dynamic range content, VRR, ALLM, Dolby Vision Gaming, and low input lag as low as 8.5ms, with 2 HDMI 2.1 ports supporting 4K at 120Hz. The TV is powered by Sony’s 2nd Gen Cognitive XR processor with AI Scene Recognition, improving dynamic tone mapping, contrast, and color reproduction. Acoustic Surface Audio+ technology delivers sound from the screen itself for immersive audio.

Compared to competitors like LG’s G5 or Panasonic’s Z95B, the Bravia 8 II offers increased contrast and improved motion handling. Its improved dark gradation and AI-enhanced processing produce more subtle textures and dimensionality in picture quality.

The Panasonic Z95B, priced $200 cheaper than the Bravia 8 II, offers a 144Hz refresh rate, two HDMI 2.1 ports, and a robust game menu. It has the lowest SDR and HDR brightness among the listed OLEDs, but it earned the top score in the SDR Bright Living Room test. The Z95B beat the Bravia 8 II in the HDR category with an overall score of 3.98.

The Samsung S95F OLED TV has the highest SDR and HDR brightness among the listed OLEDs, making it ideal for sunnier rooms or rooms with lots of lights. LG's G5 has the lowest input latency (9.2ms), making it a good choice for gaming.

The Panasonic Z95B also boasts one of the best built-in speakers in the market, offering bombastic audio that can be customized through its 360 degree Soundscape Pro software. It comes with Fire TV, providing instant access to favorite content and several cloud gaming services.

The Sony Bravia 8 II and Panasonic Z95B OLED TVs are currently available on Amazon, with the Bravia 8 II priced at $3,298 (originally $3,499) and the Z95B priced at $2,399 (originally $2,599) for the 55-inch models.

In summary, the Sony Bravia 8 II combines top-tier QD-OLED brightness, excellent color gamut coverage, and advanced AI processing to offer one of the best OLED TVs currently available, competing closely with or surpassing other flagship OLEDs in real-world performance and picture quality metrics.

Technology has motivated an enhancement in Sony's Bravia 8 II OLED TV, as it incorporates QD-OLED panel technology, delivering outstanding brightness while preserving strong shadow detail and color fidelity. Gadgets, such as competing OLED TVs, may have distinctive qualities, but the Bravia 8 II excels as a balanced choice for users seeking the perfect blend of technology and picture quality.
