Samsung's SmartThings platform has made a significant advancement
In the Summer of 2025, the Samsung SmartThings platform underwent significant upgrades, making it an attractive choice for smart home users. These enhancements, announced at the Galaxy Unpacked event and detailed in July 2025, emphasise AI-powered features and improved cross-platform compatibility.
One of the key new features is the AI-Powered Routine Creation Assistant. This flagship addition uses large language models to enable users to create smart home automations using natural language commands. For instance, a user can simply type or speak, "Turn off all the lights when I leave the house," and SmartThings will automatically build that routine. This assistant simplifies routine creation for both beginners and advanced users, available to Samsung account holders in the U.S. and Korea on Android and iOS.
Another significant development is the introduction of more granular routine controls. SmartThings now supports layered automation routines through a new "Delay Actions" capability, allowing multiple timed actions within a single routine — such as gradually waking up with lights, coffee brewing, and music sequentially triggered. Additionally, the “Confirm to Run Actions” feature prevents accidental triggers in multi-user households by prompting users before a routine executes.
The updates also expand Apple device compatibility, enhancing integration with iOS devices, including Apple Watch control and better support for Apple users, thereby broadening SmartThings’ cross-platform usability.
Device setup and routine configuration have been made more intuitive and faster, supporting Samsung’s goal of making SmartThings accessible to a wider audience.
The SmartThings Apple Watch app has received an overhaul, making it faster to swap between different devices straight from your wrist. Samsung is also expanding the availability of its Calm Onboarding feature, currently available in 14 countries, to 58 by the time the rollout finishes.
The SmartThings Find service is getting a makeover with a new feature that makes it easier to have friends and family help you look for lost items. Now all you have to do is send a link, and it can be viewed from any device — including other mobile operating systems like iPhone.
The new feature Confirm to Run Actions in SmartThings notifies users and confirms actions before starting them, such as ensuring no one is home before arming the security system. The Routine Creation Assistant also implements SmartThings' Delay Actions feature, making it simple to create staggered commands.
Finally, the SmartThings Virtual Home feature lets users toy around with different smart home gadgets in a virtual setting to better imagine how they might work and interact with their existing setup.
In summary, the summer 2025 Galaxy Unpacked event introduced SmartThings enhancements that focus on AI-driven automation, more precise control options, and greater support for Apple devices, all designed to simplify and enrich the connected home experience.
