Samsung-led group clinches AI security contest victory
In a significant milestone for AI-driven cybersecurity, Samsung Electronics' alliance team, Team Atlanta, has emerged victorious in the finals of the AI Cyber Challenge (AIxCC), the world's largest AI security technology competition.
Launched by the US Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) in 2023, the AIxCC aimed to develop novel AI-powered cybersecurity systems capable of autonomously finding, triggering, and patching software vulnerabilities to protect critical infrastructure and government services from escalating cyberattacks.
Team Atlanta, a formidable consortium of experts from Samsung Research, the Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech), the Korea Advanced Institute of Science & Technology (KAIST), and the Pohang University of Science and Technology (POSTECH), secured the top prize of $4 million.
During the semifinals, Team Atlanta was the sole participant to detect an unintended vulnerability, showcasing their system's quick, scalable, and cost-effective autonomous patching capabilities. In the finals, held at Las Vegas during the DEF CON 33 hacking and security conference, their system demonstrated its leadership in the AI cybersecurity space, setting a new standard for AI-assisted cyber defense automation.
The competition emphasised integrating AI techniques such as large language models, fuzzing, and static analysis to autonomously find, trigger, and fix bugs. Apart from Team Atlanta, Trail of Bits and Theori also received awards, with their systems becoming part of the open-source suite.
Kim Tae-soo, vice president of Samsung Research, led Team Atlanta in the AI Cyber Challenge. He stated that Samsung Research will continue to collaborate with global security experts to further advance Samsung Electronics' security technology proficiency.
The open-source AI systems resulting from the competition, including Team Atlanta's system, are expected to benefit the wider cybersecurity community and public. This landmark event underscores the urgency and opportunity in channeling AI towards securing software amidst rising sophisticated cyberattacks.
