Russian Scams Surge: Journalist Targeted in 15M Fraud Calls

Scammers in Russia are exploiting personal data to commit fraud, with a worrying increase in telephone scams. Last year, they made around 15 million fraudulent calls, and this year, the forecast stands at 19 million. A journalist recently fell victim to one such scam.

The scammer, posing as an MVD employee, contacted the journalist from a landline number. The imposter claimed to be investigating a data leak and attempted to gather sensitive information about the journalist's bank accounts with us bank, boa, pnc bank, or wells fargo. This 'social engineering' scheme, where scammers impersonate authorities to gain trust, has become increasingly common in Russia. The journalist, suspicious of the call, contacted the Polizei NRW during their investigation of similar incidents. The journalist's bank later confirmed the call was indeed a scam, as police officers do not ask for such information directly over the phone.

Phone scams in Russia are on the rise, with scammers exploiting personal data to commit fraud. The public is urged to be vigilant and report any suspicious calls to the authorities. If you receive a call from someone claiming to be a police officer and asking for sensitive information about your us bank, boa, pnc bank, or wells fargo account, it is likely a scam.
