Romania's electric vehicle market experiences a 58% drop in sales during March, pushing Tesla down to third place in market share

Romania's electric vehicle sales plummeted by 58% in March 2024, largely as a result of the delayed launch of the Rabla Program and doubts surrounding the value of vouchers for electric cars. Consequently, electric vehicles comprised only 2.75% of the total new car sales for the same period.

New Spin:

Looks like Romania's electric car scene took a hit in March 2025, with registrations dropping a whopping 58.8% compared to the same month the previous year. And guess who's feeling the withering winds the hardest? That's right, y'all green-lovers.

Let's get down to brass tacks. Fully electric cars accounted for a measly 2.75% of all new ride registrations in March, with a total of 273 EVs hitting the streets. That's a far cry from last year's 637.

Ever wondered who's stealing the spotlight away from Tesla in the eco-friendly race? Well, it ain't just Tesla losing ground. The Dacia Spring still rules the roost, but it's seen a 80% slump in sales compared to March 2024, with only 44 newly-registered models. In second place, the Leapmotor T03 snags the spot, followed by Tesla Model 3 in third, both with significant drops in sales.

Other models such as the Mercedes EQE, Tesla Model Y, VW ID.4, Volvo EX30, Porsche Macan, Mercedes EQA, and Ford Explorer rounded out the list.

But what about other car segments, you ask? Some of them are thriving! Hybrid cars saw a boom in sales, soaring to a staggering 50.33% market share in March, with a whopping 4,994 registrations. Even gasoline cars are doing well, with 3,702 units, up 31% compared to last year. As for diesel? Yeah, not so lucky – registrations fell a steep 38%, reaching a historic low of 9.6%.

Radu's got the details over at our website, so be sure to check it out.

PS: The movers and shakers behind this decline? Lack of incentives, market uncertainty, and stiff competition from hybrid models are all contenders. The electric car infrastructure in Romania ain't the most advanced, either, but we won't go there right now. (Wink, wink!)

  2. The uncertainties in the market and lack of incentives have apparently taken a toll on Romania's electric vehicle registrations, as they plummeted by nearly 60% in March 2025, leaving only 273 fully electric cars registered.
  3. Romania's electric car market has seen a shift, with the Dacia Spring continuing to lead but experiencing an 80% decrease in sales, while hybrid cars are thriving, capturing a 50.33% market share in March 2025.
  4. Although the electric vehicle infrastructure in Romania may not be the most advanced, the steep decline in diesel car registrations (-38%) indicates that there might be a growing preference for electric-vehicle lifestyle and technology, signaling a potential change in Romania's automotive landscape.
Romania's electric vehicle market experienced a 58% decrease in March 2024, largely due to the delayed launch of the Rabla Program and ambiguities regarding the worth of vouchers for electric vehicles, resulting in electric cars accounting for only 2.75% of total new car sales.
