Robot Masterfully Writes and Sketches, Advancing Human-Robot Communication
A robot has demonstrated remarkable writing and sketching abilities, marking a significant step towards better human-robot communication. The robot, developed by an undergraduate student, can write 'hello' in multiple languages and reproduce rough sketches with human-like strokes.
The robot's impressive feat is thanks to an algorithm developed by Atsu Kotani. This algorithm enables robots to reproduce human-like strokes by analyzing images of handwriting or sketches. The robot was able to write 'hello' in various languages, including Greek, Hindi, Urdu, Chinese, and Yiddish, with reasonable stroke accuracy. Notably, the robot learned stroke order from scratch, unlike existing work that requires pre-programmed stroke orders. The algorithm also generalized its ability to reproduce strokes, accurately reproducing English print and cursive characters it had not been trained on.
The system's masterwork was its copy of the Mona Lisa sketch, created with human-like strokes on a dry erase board. The algorithm uses deep learning networks to deduce the series of pen strokes that created handwritten words or sketches, allowing a robot to reproduce them. The algorithm uses two distinct models to determine the starting point, direction, and length of each stroke, alternating between a global model and a zoomed-in model.
This breakthrough brings us closer to robots that can perform tasks requiring human-like writing or sketching abilities. With potential applications such as leaving Post-it Notes, taking dictation, or sketching diagrams, the future of human-robot interaction looks more collaborative than ever.
