Revision of Meze Audio Liric (2nd Generation): Spacious and Intelligent Headphones Assessment

The Meze Audio Liric 2nd Generation has made its debut, offering a significant improvement over its predecessor for those with a discerning ear. Despite the economic changes and inflation, the price of the Liric 2nd Generation is lower than the original Liric's launch price, making it an attractive option for audiophiles.

The design of the Liric 2nd Generation remains largely unchanged from the original model, with the earcups now adorned with striped ebony wood instead of leather. However, the key improvements lie in its sonic performance. The Liric 2nd Generation addresses the original model's lean and bright sound signature, offering a warmer, lusher sound with better body and texture.

The Liric 2nd Generation has a frequency response of 4Hz-92kHz, reaching awfully long at both ends of the spectrum. This wide range allows it to deliver remarkable sonic clarity, expressive midrange, and crisp highs, enhancing the qualities that the original Liric was already praised for. The new model also offers improved dynamics and detail retrieval without the brightness peaks found in the first iteration.

The headphones dish the details with enthusiasm, picking up and putting into context even the most transient, fleeting, and minor occurrences in a recording. The Liric 2nd Generation's soundstage is big, well-defined, and puts the required distance between each element of a recording.

The Liric 2nd Generation uses an MZ4 Isodynamic Hybrid Array planar magnetic driver, and its diaphragm has an active area of over 3500mm2 and weighs 0.08g. The driver's dual-coil arrangement handles different frequency ranges, ensuring a balanced and detailed sound.

To enhance the sound quality, the Liric 2nd Generation features a new metal plate, called a 'Quarter Wavelength Resonator Mask', to attenuate high-frequency peaks. The headphones come with two cables: a 1.3m braided Furukawa PCUHD copper cable and a 3m length of soft TPE with a 3.5mm unbalanced termination.

The Liric 2nd Generation can handle big dynamic shifts without alarms, putting significant distance between 'quiet' and 'loud' even at high volumes. The earpads are generously padded and connect magnetically, allowing for easy renewal or replacement.

The Liric 2nd Generation delivers an uncomplicatedly inspiring sound when connected to a high-end digital audio player. Its tone is beautifully judged, slightly on the 'warm' side of neutral, making music sound natural and organic. It is not dispassionate but neither ramps up the sonic excitement without good reason.

The Liric 2nd Generation is quite expensive, but the sound quality justifies the price for those within its price bracket. It is now available for sale in the UK for £1850, in the US for $1999, and in Australia for AU$3549. For those seeking a high-quality audio experience, the Meze Audio Liric 2nd Generation is a worthwhile investment.
