Revamped Virtual Representation Shows Improvement in Apple Vision Pro
Gearing Up for visionOS 26: A Fresh Look at Apple's Mixed Reality Headset
Get ready to dive back into Apple's virtual world with the updated Vision Pro headset, priced at $3,499. Although the initial launch didn't generate much buzz, Apple's been persistent in refining the platform. Here's a sneak peek at two major improvements coming with the visionOS 26 upgrade: Personas and Widgets. (Apple recently announced that it's changing its operating system names to match the following year)
During my test run, the Personas upgrade stood out. Gone are the days of awkward and unflattering digital representations. With an emphasis on improved detail, texture, and realistic design, Personas are now more natural and even offer a full side view. Hair textures and skin complexions got a significant upgrade, and adding virtual glasses, in my case, to match my actual frames, was a breeze. No more clipping or wonky visuals! (Feel free to check out my quick greeting video below.)
Now, I won't sugarcoat it; there's still some uncanny valley vibe going on, as the facial expressions and eye movements are somewhat rigid. However, it's leaps and bounds better than the debut back in 2024. Utilize these Personas for virtual video calls or when someone remotely joins your space.
Another exciting addition is the improved Widget functionality. Picture stapling apps to specific spots in your home, like a Calendar, Clock, or Music widget, that remain in place. Apple achieves this by mapping your home, creating a private directory stored on your Apple Vision Pro device. Even after rebooting, the headset remembers the placement of widgets, allowing you to set up a personal virtual space in no time.
I wore the Vision Pro headset and marveled at how familiar my virtual spaces felt. Roaming from room to room, I found widgets scattered everywhere. Apple's ambition is to make users feel right at home while wearing the headset, even if they might end up resembling Wade Watts from Ready Player One.
Don't let the initial mockery fool you; Apple's all in on the visionOS world. Although my wife wasn't a fan initially, it's worth noting that Apple's sticking to its guns, aiming for users to live in the virtual world created by their headset. So buckle up, folks, as we embark on this exciting journey towards an immersive, interactive, and more realistic mixed reality experience.
