Retail outfit, REI, appoints Amazon exec as their inaugural Chief Commercial Officer

With a string of fresh appointments, outdoor gear and apparel retailer REI steps into the future with a brand-new executive role. As of January 3rd, Amazon veteran Cameron Janes will don the hat of the retailer's first Chief Commercial Officer (CCO).

In his new role, Janes will oversee the omnichannel experience for REI, with a focus on seamlessly intertwining the retailer's brick-and-mortar and e-commerce channels. The goal is to push the envelope on ways physical and digital retail can come together, according to a company statement.

Cameron's background at Amazon's physical retail, coupled with his digital media experience at Walmart, positions him well to tackle this challenging assignment. Theviously, REI has promoted Kelley Hall to Executive Vice President and CFO, and Vivienne Long to Senior Vice President and CMO, signaling a revamped focus on senior leadership within the company.

These days, the role of CCO has been a hot topic in retail, with numerous organizations embracing the position this year. Notable names like Glossier, DTC home brand Parachute, and mattress brand Serta have all appointed CCOs in the past few months. The role of CCO is all about aligning strategies with market opportunities, driving revenue growth, and fostering digital transformation.

REI's focus on virtual experiences has grown in prominence, especially in the wake of the pandemic's push towards online shopping. Last year, the retailer introduced virtual outfitting appointments, allowing customers to connect with knowledgeable store associates remotely. Today, some REI associates spend up to three days a week engaged in virtual consultations, while remaining on the shop floor for two days.
