Repurposed EV batteries from Stellantis now supply power to Italdesign's compact mobility capsule
The Avathor One, a groundbreaking mobility electric vehicle (EV), is being developed in collaboration with Turin-based start-up Avathor and Italdesign, part of the Volkswagen Group. This innovative vehicle is designed with a focus on accessibility, aiming to cater to wheelchair users and individuals with reduced mobility.
Equipped with LED headlights, a rear-view camera, and collision-avoidance sensors, the Avathor One ensures a safe and comfortable driving experience. The vehicle is designed to handle gradients up to 20% and steps up to 8cm high, making it suitable for various terrains.
The Avathor One boasts an impressive range of up to 50km between charges, with a top speed limited to 10km/h, making it ideal for short trips within urban environments. The vehicle's rear ramp accommodates wheelchairs, further enhancing its accessibility.
To cater to different user needs, the Avathor One features joystick controls and a pull-out bench. The vehicle's design is based on Italdesign's 2019 WheeM-i concept, showcasing a sleek and modern aesthetic.
The development of the Avathor One is overseen by SUSTAINera, Stellantis' circular-economy arm, demonstrating a commitment to sustainability. The company is repurposing its retired 15kWh EV batteries into smaller modules for the Avathor One, reducing waste and promoting a circular economy.
The smaller modules are repackaged into either 1.4kWh or 2.8kWh batteries by local partner Intent S.r.l., ensuring the efficient use of resources. This collaboration demonstrates how old batteries can find an immediate, human-focused purpose.
Market launches for the Avathor One are planned from 2025, with an Italian launch scheduled for later this year. Spain will follow in 2026, and other markets will be introduced in 2027. Stellantis is also partnering on larger projects such as the ENEL X Pioneer system at Rome's Fiumicino Airport, further showcasing its commitment to sustainable mobility solutions.
In conclusion, the Avathor One represents a significant step forward in accessible and sustainable mobility. With its innovative design and focus on recycling, it promises to redefine the way we think about electric vehicles and their impact on the environment.
