Reduced Cost Tesla Model Y Identified: Here's the Modifications Made
Affordable Tesla Model Y Set for Q4 2025 Launch
Tesla's much-anticipated affordable version of the Model Y is on its way, with production having kicked off in the first half of 2025. According to the company's Q2 2025 earnings call, the affordable Model Y is expected to hit the market by the end of the fourth quarter (Q4) of 2025.
The prototype of the low-cost Model Y, recently spotted in a close-up sighting, showcases a series of design changes both inside and out. One of the most noticeable modifications is the use of textile seat bolsters instead of vinyl leather finishes, which is a departure from the current Model Y.
The affordable Model Y also features a simplified rear design, omitting the reflective light bar that spans the back of the current Model Y. Instead, it sports a more traditional rear design, with a painted body panel replacing the rear gray insert. The prototype also lacks the split headlight design and front light bar, opting for a more conventional look.
Another significant change is the center console, which has undergone a complete redesign. The affordable Model Y continues Tesla's minimalist control philosophy, with a single stalk for turn signals. However, it does not feature a rear entertainment screen or ventilated seating.
The affordable Model Y also appears to be a shorter-wheelbase variant, hinting at Tesla's strategy to deliver a more affordable crossover option without significantly compromising the Model Y's core appeal. The prototype lacks some premium features, but it retains the familiar screen-mounted gear shifter.
The affordable Model Y no longer has coat hooks, a parcel shelf, or storage in front of the cupholders. Instead, it has a solid roof design instead of a panoramic glass roof.
Tesla's CFO confirmed during the earnings call that production had started in early 2025 but scaling up will take longer due to prioritizing deliveries and launching challenges. Multiple sources agree on a Q4 2025 launch window for the affordable Model Y variant, with production ramping up now.
First deliveries of the affordable Model Y are anticipated to take place before the end of the year. With its affordable price point and core Tesla features, the affordable Model Y is set to make electric vehicles more accessible to a wider audience.
