Redefining Live-Streaming: Dejero's Intelligent Mixing Enhances Broadcasting of World Ocean Documentary

Australia's Gold Coast – Revolutionizing Marine Sports Broadcasting

The Gold Coast has been a hotspot for the World Ocean Series (WOS) for over a decade. A Suit Production and Creative Illusion, two Australian companies, have been instrumental in providing production services for this mammoth event. Initially, a simple wirecast to Facebook and YouTube, the WOS has bloomed into a high-quality livestreamed event, broadcast to numerous OTT platforms like 7Plus, Kayo Sports, and TVNZ+.

For over ten production days, from November to February, we've battled the elements on beaches across Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, and South Australia, livestreaming the WOS, where top surf athletes from around the world compete in an Ironman-style tournament.

The Early Days – A Thrilling Battle Against Unpredictable ConditionsIn the beginning, we faced an uphill battle against the unpredictable beach environments. Sun, rain, sand, salt, and ocean mist wreaked havoc on our equipment. Our initial setup involved a Windows PC powered by a generator, running cables to a single drone and a few static cameras. It wasn't uncommon for equipment to malfunction, or computers to overheat. And remember our director who had an unexpected dip during the live stream due to a misjudged tide? Yep, those were the days!

These struggles led us to rethink our approach. For a few series, we switched to hiring an OB truck to shield our gear from the elements. But transporting the truck and the crew, along with digging trenches for cables, became a grueling and costly endeavor.

Two years ago, during a WOS event in Manly near Sydney, the biggest challenge struck. After a 900-mile journey, a late-night street sweeper accidentally wrecked our fiber lines, and just before the broadcast, a shark alert forced us to cancel the event, leaving event organizers with a significant bill.

Revolutionizing Broadcasting – Untethered and Ready for Anything

That's when we turned to Dejero Smart Blending Technology. Now, we use Dejero EnGo mobile video transmitters for our live camera feeds, equipped with six SIM cards and capable of aggregating signals from multiple carriers, satellite, and even Starlink in remote locations.

This all-remote, cable-free production workflow has drastically transformed our operations. Our central control room now has a Dejero WayPoint that receives EnGo feeds. Producers, directors, graphics operators, and even commentary teams can work from their home bases without needing to be on-site.

With real-time communication facilitated by EnGo's IFB voice communication and a multiviewer for monitoring feeds, our new workflow has streamlined our operations, slashed costs, and increased production quality. Viewers have praised the improved quality, and event sponsors have taken notice, attracted by the high-quality broadcasts.

We've wrapped our second season using this Dejero-centric workflow, and the results speak for themselves. By embracing technology like Dejero Smart Blending, we're continuing to push the boundaries in live sports broadcasting, up next – jet ski cameras and additional drone feeds.
