Recruitment: Latham Hires Eversheds Asia's Technology Lead
Latham & Watkins, a leading global law firm, has welcomed Rhys McWhirter as a partner in its Hong Kong office. McWhirter's senior expertise and skills in technology law are seen as a significant addition to the firm's Asia offices.
With over 13 years of experience in technology law, McWhirter specializes in commercial law, intellectual property, data privacy, and artificial intelligence (AI). His practice primarily serves the technology, financial services, infrastructure, mining, and aviation sectors.
McWhirter is recognized as one of Asia’s leading technology transactions lawyers, known for his experience with business-critical, fast-growth, and high-stakes technology projects. His clientele includes multinational tech companies, regulatory bodies, financial institutions, airlines, and global data center providers across Asia, the Middle East, and Africa.
Posit Laohaphan, managing partner of Latham & Watkins' Asia offices, stated that McWhirter's senior expertise and skills further enhance their regional team. Ghaith Mahmood, global chair of the firm's data and technology transactions practice, praised McWhirter's reputation for advising on transformational technology-driven projects at the cutting edge of the market.
McWhirter's arrival at Latham & Watkins adds to the firm's partner count in Hong Kong, now totaling 21 partners. His expertise in technology-driven projects is seen as a boost to Latham & Watkins' Asia technology practice.
Before joining Latham & Watkins, McWhirter served as the head of technology and data for Asia at Eversheds Sutherland. Prior to that, he worked with PwC in Sydney and Hong Kong, and had earlier stints at Australian firms Gilbert + Tobin and Herbert Geer. McWhirter also spent three years as an in-house counsel at Westpac.
McWhirter's practice encompasses commercial transactions, intellectual property, data privacy, and AI matters. He advises clients on regulatory and outsourcing compliance, data privacy programs (including under Mainland China’s PIPL), cyber-readiness, data breach incident matters, and licensing of core technology solutions across the Asia Pacific region.
