Quantum and AI research given a boost with D-Wave's introduction of on-site systems

In a significant leap forward for quantum computing, D-Wave Quantum has unveiled its latest offering: the on-premises Advantage2 quantum computing system. This powerful technology is set to revolutionise research centres, academic institutions, and governments, promising to accelerate research, bolster national security, and enhance global competitiveness.

The Advantage2 system boasts several key features that make it a standout choice. With over 4,400 qubits and 20-way connectivity using the Zephyr topology, it can embed more complex problems, making it ideal for high-performance computing (HPC) environments. This increased connectivity provides a 40% increase in energy scale and a 75% reduction in noise, leading to higher-quality solutions for complex calculations.

The system offers a twofold increase in coherence, enabling faster time-to-solution, and supports fast anneal for coherent quantum annealing at scale, reducing external disturbances. Integration with hybrid solvers in the Leap quantum cloud service allows for the support of up to two million variables and constraints, facilitating large-scale, business-critical applications in production.

Despite its advanced capabilities, the system maintains an energy-efficient profile, requiring only 12.5 kilowatts of electricity, consistent across six generations of D-Wave systems. This energy efficiency is crucial, as the growing focus on AI and compute-intensive technology generates demand for on-premises quantum computers, particularly in HPC environments.

D-Wave's systems offer 99.9% availability and uptime, making them reliable for continuous research and operations. The new systems are one of the world's largest annealing quantum computers, with over 5,000 qubits and 15-way connectivity.

To incentivise organisations dissatisfied with their current quantum computers, D-Wave has announced the new "Quantum Uplift" program. This program offers a compelling reason for organisations to switch to D-Wave's Advantage systems.

Alan Baratz, the CEO of D-Wave, predicts significant progress in quantum research and quantum AI development with the integration of annealing quantum computing and HPC. Pricing for the new offering is tailored to meet each customer's unique requirements.

D-Wave's quantum computers are highly performant, reliable, and available, helping customers solve complex problems beyond the reach of classical computers. The quantum processing unit (QPU), used in quantum computers, offers unique strengths in solving complex problems that can enhance AI capabilities.

On-premises installation allows customers to tightly integrate with existing classical and HPC systems. More than 100 organisations trust D-Wave with their toughest computational challenges. The increased focus on AI's power consumption is a challenge that quantum computers may address. Nearly 20% of respondents prioritise the control, security, and immediacy provided by on-site quantum computing infrastructure.

D-Wave's vice president of infrastructure, Irwan Owen, is leading the systems go-to-market effort. The company partners with institutions like Yonsei University to facilitate collaborative research, talent development, and the exploration of quantum computing applications in various sectors.

With the Advantage2 system, D-Wave Quantum has made available on-premises advantage quantum computing systems for purchase, promising to revolutionise the way research is conducted and problems are solved in the realm of quantum computing.
