## Ural Locomotives' ES104 and ES105 "Finist" Electric Trains: Modernising Russia's Regional Rail Network

Ural Locomotives, a joint venture between Sinara Group and Siemens, specialises in manufacturing electric locomotives and trains primarily for the Russian market. Their products are designed to upgrade and modernise Russia’s railway infrastructure with advanced technology, energy efficiency, and improved passenger comfort.

### The ES104 "Finist" Electric Train

The ES104 "Finist" is an established model in the regional electric train category, currently in operation serving suburban and regional routes. It features modern traction systems and is designed for electrified lines with 3 kV DC. ES104 units have been delivered and commissioned on various lines, successfully replacing older rolling stock. The train is known for enhanced passenger comfort, including air conditioning, ergonomic seating, and noise reduction technologies.

Key features of the ES104 include speed capability up to around 130 km/h, energy-efficient asynchronous traction motors, a modular design for easy maintenance and adaptability, and compliance with Russian railway safety and operational standards.

### The ES105 "Finist" Electric Train

The ES105 "Finist" is the latest development by Ural Locomotives, aimed at expanding the capabilities and versatility of the previous ES104 model. It incorporates more advanced technologies, including improved traction control and enhanced energy efficiency. The ES105 is designed to meet growing demands for faster, more comfortable, and more reliable regional rail service. Plans include higher maximum speeds (potentially up to 160 km/h), enabling it to serve longer-distance regional routes more effectively. The ES105 is expected to have better passenger amenities, such as infotainment systems, improved accessibility features for people with disabilities, and enhanced safety systems.

The ES105 is in the late stages of development and initial testing phases. Prototype units have been produced, undergoing performance trials on Russian railway lines. Ural Locomotives anticipates certification and full-scale production within the next few years. The company aims to supply the ES105 to regional carriers and possibly expand export opportunities to neighbouring countries with compatible electrification standards.

### Summary and Outlook

| Aspect | ES104 "Finist" | ES105 "Finist" | |---------------------|---------------------------------------|---------------------------------------| | Status | In production and operation | In development and testing | | Speed Capability | Up to ~130 km/h | Planned up to ~160 km/h | | Passenger Comfort | Modern, reliable | Enhanced, with new amenities | | Technology | Proven asynchronous traction | Advanced traction and energy systems | | Deployment | Regional and suburban routes | Future regional and longer-distance routes | | Production Outlook | Ongoing deliveries | Expected to start full production within a few years |

### Future Plans

Ural Locomotives plans to expand the ES105 series for wider adoption across Russia’s regional rail network. Continuous upgrades in technology will aim to improve energy efficiency and passenger experience. Possible exports to countries with similar rail systems are also being considered. Furthermore, development of complementary rolling stock and integration with digital rail management systems will improve operational efficiency.

The ES104 "Finist" electric trains began operating on the Sverdlovsk Railway in December 2023, attracting passengers from other forms of transport from the very first days of operation. The ES105 "Finist" electric trains are currently undergoing trials, with two five-car compositions being tested simultaneously. The "Ural Locomotives" plant is serially producing the fully domestic high-speed electric train ES104 "Finist".

Stay tuned for more updates on the development and deployment of these innovative electric trains!

The ES104 and ES105 "Finist" electric trains, manufactured by Ural Locomotives, showcase advanced technology in Russia's regional railway infrastructure, aligning with the finance industry by investing in research and development. As the ES104 serves suburban and regional routes, the ES105, currently in development, aims to expand capabilities to meet growing demands, particularly in the transportation sector, with enhanced speed and passenger comfort. The technologies utilized in these electric trains also demonstrate a strong connection to the automotive and technology industries, as they incorporate energy-efficient systems and modular designs that reflect trends found in these sectors.
