Peugeot E-208 GT Shakes Up Compact Electric Vehicle Market
Peugeot's latest offering, the E-208 GT, is set to shake up the compact electric vehicle market. This new model promises a blend of character, dynamics, and affordability, bucking the trend of platform-engineered cars.
The E-208 GT stands out in the competitive electric compact car segment, going head-to-head with the Renault R5 Comfort Range, Opel Corsa Electric, Mini Cooper SE, and Hyundai Inster. It also faces traditional rivals like the Volkswagen Polo and Renault Clio, which are yet to launch purely electric models.
Peugeot has chosen not to follow the retro design trend seen in some of its competitors. Instead, the E-208 GT offers a harmonious and well-composed compact body, reflecting Peugeot's commitment to design evolution.
However, the interior of the E-208 GT has some design flaws. The position of the instrument binnacle and reliance on Stellantis parts bin components may not meet the high standards set by the exterior design.
While the E-208 GT can't yet recapture the magic of the 1980s-era 205 GTI due to weight constraints, the forthcoming E-208 GTI promises to bring some of that spirit back. Despite this, it's expected to have less zest than its iconic predecessor.
Compared to compact Peugeots of the noughties and 2010s, the E-208 GT is a significant improvement. Its front end, however, is less impressive than its rear, with a fussy grille and bulky design elements.
As the battle for the best small electric car heats up, with manufacturers improving profitability and technology, the Peugeot E-208 GT is a strong contender. Despite some interior design flaws, its exterior design and competitive pricing make it an attractive option in the electric compact car segment.
