OPM's New Director Scott Kupor Brings AI Focus, Plans Major Workforce Reduction
The Office of Public Management (OPM) is set to undergo significant changes under new director Scott Kupor. The Silicon Valley veteran aims to integrate artificial intelligence (AI) into the agency's tasks and prepare employees for an AI-forward work environment. Meanwhile, OPM is also planning to reduce its workforce by one-third by the end of the year.
Kupor, who took over as OPM's director, is eager to bring a 'Silicon Valley' mentality to the agency. He envisions AI as a key tool to increase job efficiency and create new opportunities. He is open to experimenting with AI in contained areas with contained risk, hoping to change the agency's mindset regarding its use.
OPM's interest in AI is not isolated. Other government agencies, such as the Department of Veterans Affairs and the Department of Justice, have also been employing AI to improve cost-efficiency. Kupor wants OPM to follow suit and be at the forefront of this technological shift.
In line with President Trump's goal of making the US the global leader in AI innovation, Kupor wants OPM employees to be prepared for work in an AI-forward way. He mentioned customer service and information combing as potential tasks for AI implementation.
Concurrently, OPM is on track to reduce its staff by one-third by Dec. 31, largely through voluntary departures. The agency aims to slim down from 3,110 employees to around 2,000. The number of contractors used by OPM is also set to be slashed from 1,200 to about 600.
Kupor's vision for OPM involves leveraging AI to enhance efficiency and prepare the agency for the future. As OPM works towards reducing its workforce, it also looks to embrace technological advancements, setting an example for other federal agencies to follow.
