OpenAI's Ambitious Plan: AI-Powered Consumer Devices by Late 2026
OpenAI is making waves in the tech world with its ambitious plans to launch AI-powered consumer devices. The company is actively recruiting Apple staff, particularly those with expertise in audio, user interfaces, and camera technology, to help bring these innovative products to life. The first generation of devices is expected to hit the market in late 2026 or early 2027.
OpenAI has been busy behind the scenes, acquiring io Products, the company of former Apple design chief Jony Ive, to work on the design of these new devices. The company is also collaborating with Luxshare, an Apple assembly partner, to make these AI-powered gadgets a reality. Luxshare's share price has already seen a significant boost, rising by about 10% on the news of the collaboration, bringing its gains for the whole of 2025 to around 50%.
The first product, a smart speaker without a display, is expected to launch in late 2026 or early 2027. This pocket-sized prototype will be designed to function in a context-aware manner and work closely with OpenAI's language models. OpenAI is also considering other suppliers, including Goertek, for components such as speaker modules, to ensure a robust supply chain.
OpenAI's foray into hardware is an exciting development in the world of AI. With the support of experienced designers and engineers from Apple, and the manufacturing capabilities of partners like Luxshare, OpenAI is well-positioned to bring innovative AI consumer devices to the market. The first product, a smart speaker without a display, is just the beginning of what promises to be an exciting new line of AI-powered gadgets.
